1.20Does anyone have BKR brand laminate flooring. Thinking about buying this brand. Any suggestions would help.?
Q.I debating on laminate flooring. BKR has caught my eye but i have never heard of it. What brand of laminate is best? 8mm or 12mm. Going on a wood floor in an old house. Ripping up carpet and tile. BKR has the underlayment already attached and the installer said he would put down a moisture barrier. This is just adding up quickly and I want to make sure i get a good brand that will last a long time.
A.The most well known brands of laminate are quik-step, & pergo. The thicker the better. If I were you I would have the real wood floors refinished. Real wood is much more durable, you won't have to buy the new flooring, and wood will add more value to your house. If the wood floor has already been refinished too many times and can't be refinished again, then maybe consider engineered wood flooring. It has a layer of real wood, it will feel more solid than laminate, it looks better, and it can be refinished when it gets worn.
1.20Laying engineered wood flooring over vinyl flooring?
Q.Can engineered wood flooring be installed on vinyl flooring?
I'm in the middle of home improvement project and have decided to lay some engineered wood flooring for my kitchen. The particular brand that I've bought requires glue-down installation.
The problem is, there's vinyl flooring that's been laid with cutback and it's not going to come up without a significant amount of work and then re-preparation of the sub flooring. I've been to the local home improvement center several times and can't really get a straight answer as to if this is possible. I've searched the Internet and its about 50-50 yes and no.
I'd really like anybody's input into my situation, as I am under a little bit of a time constraint to finish the project as this is my new house and I've got to move out of my old house in in a week.
Thanks in advance to your answers!
A.If you are laying down Bruce or Armstrong flooring, they have instructions for laying over vinyl flooring. Basically you can't lay the flooring over more than 2 layers of vinyl. You want to make sure the flooring is stripped, not sanded, especially if there is a gloss on the floor. Don't sand if its a resilient floor, it may contain asbestos. Also they recommend specific adhesives that will bond with the floor.
1.10Carpet or wood flooring?
Q.Im getting ready to replace the berber carpet through out my house and cant decide if I want carpet or wood flooring. My kitchen, entry way and both bathrooms have newly installed ceramic tile. Which would be better carpet or wood floors?

1.00What kind of flooring do I need that can be cleaned easily when an invalid has an accident?
Q.I have an invalid living in my house. He sometimes cannot control his bowels and makes a mess in the floor. I currently have carpet over hardwood floor. I need the carpet to be taken out and want to find some sort of flooring that can be mopped with Clorox or Lysol in water to destroy odor. I would like to avoid any type of flooring that would have to be glued to the hardwood. It appears that all vinyl flooring has to glued down. Does anyone have any idea what I can put over the hardwood that will stand up to some serious cleaning?
A.Try laminate flooring, it is easy to install by locking the pieces together like a puzzle and it floats(needs no glue). It also cleans like a dream, we just got it and love it. You can get the kind that looks like wood or tile. We have the ceramic tile type and it really looks like tile. GL!
1.00What to use as underlay under vinyl flooring on a concrete floor?
Q.I am about to have some vinyl flooring fitted in my kitchen and would grateful for any suggestions as to what I can use for cushioning and to try and keep the floor as warm as possible under foot. I have had vinyl flooring before and it is still hard and cold when standing on the flooring. I have even tried cork tiles and this did not seem to make a huge difference. Would a laminate and wood flooring underlay be suitable or would this be a waste of time?
I should add that I am in the UK.
A.An idea, There is a product by DRIcore subfloor which is designed to be put over concrete floors in basements, playrooms etc, this may be something you would want to look into, it would serve all your needs. Lowes carries this by the way, here's a link to the DRIcore website

1.00What flooring can I use to impart a Japanese feel to my room?
Q.Aside from the expensive yet beautiful tatami mats, what kind of wooden flooring would impart a Japanese feel to my room? It's a small bedroom and I'm going to place a straw-type, tatami mat-looking, area rug to finish the room off. What flooring would be a nice accent to this?
A.Wood and tatami are expensive! plus real tatami is prone to hold nasty bugs (ticks and fleas and the like) which are bad for allergies so you have to do some serious cleaning and they need to get replaced every X amount of years. do japanese ghetto instead! get tatami mat rolls (the kind japanese take to the beach or instead of a blanket for a picnic or what some may use for a curtain) and lay these out on your floor. for real ghetto, duct tape them to the floor.
1.00What flooring and trim goes nice with white walls?
Q.Im remodeling my apartment and my roommate chose white to paint the walls in our entry way and living room? i get to choose the carpet or flooring (hardwood, etc) and color of the trim, does anyone know what color of trim, and what type of floor would go nicely with the white walls?
A.Lucky you! I'd rather be allowed to choose flooring and trim any day! That's a keeper whereas paint can be changed.
As for what matched white walls, basically everything! White is not a color in decorating, but the absense of all color and that is why you can match it with anything.
So, you can buy whatever pleases you! Do keep in mind that the lighter the floor color, the larger the room will appear and the darker the floor color, the smaller the room will appear. Also, lint, dust, etc., shows up more on dark floors.
What you choose to use as material for the floor really depends on your budget. Hardwood floors are definitely the best for getting a return on your money. If you can't afford that, then consider these types of flooring:
- laminate wood floor
- vinyl soft floor covering
- bamboo flooring (my favorite, by the way!)
- ceramic tile (did you know that you can get ceramic tile that looks soooo much lilke wood, you have to touch it to know the difference? It's better than hardwood since it doesn't scratch and is very resistant!)
Will you be painting the trim or using natural wood? If using natural wood, it is advisable to match the floor.
Enjoy!

Wood Flooring
If you are considering wood flooring for your Colorado Springs area home, you've made an excellent choice. Wood flooring gives your home a beautifully old fashioned look that's always in vogue. A room with a hard wood floor has an especially warm and cozy feel about it. This stunning beauty doesn't mean that it's hard to clean, however. Wood floors are easy to maintain, and a house with wood flooring always fetches a high price in the market. With some maintenance, you can expect your wood floor to last for the life time of the house. Besides in these "go green" days, hard wood flooring is one of the most eco friendly choices out there.
There are several factors to take into consideration before deciding on a type, style, color, finish and species of wood. Also, there is your life style to consider, the area of the house where the new wood flooring will be installed as well as the area where you live. For instance, solid wood can shrink and expand during moist weather conditions or during extreme temperature changes. When it comes to species, the old favorites are still going strong -- oak wood floors, red oak flooring, hard wood Brazilian cherry, maple, pine, cherry hard wood floors. If you would like the finish of wood flooring without the hefty price tag, consider bamboo hard wood flooring. Bamboo is slightly harder to maintain, but it's comparatively inexpensive, and with the availability of easy to install strips and planks offers a variety of style possibilities. Also, consider the room where you will install the new wood flooring. Oak hard wood floors give foyers the formal look they deserve. Such areas can also be accented by using medallions and patterns. Your formal living room is also ideally suited for a dark wood floor, but remember that the darker the wood, the smaller the illusion of space in the room. Bed rooms take very well to a fine wood floor because carpets and rugs in light colors are always accented by the darkness of the floor.
Hard wood floors are not as expensive as they used to be, and now come in competitively priced styles. Even so you may find them more expensive than other flooring options. Consider however, that your hard wood floor, with a little maintenance can last for the life time of the house, and the fact that a home with a wood floor sells quicker and at higher prices, and you begin to see the value of investing in a hard wood floor. Some basic steps ensure that your hardwood floor can last for years. Keep these golden rules in mind. Keep your wood floor away from water, and don't damp mop. Wipe spills as soon as they occur. If you have hard wood floor in the kitchen or just outside the bath room, place mats to absorb any spilt water. Always follow your manufacturers' recommendations for the cleaning of your floor. Never wax a wood floor, and place rugs and mats strategically near entrance ways and door ways to prevent dirt and grit from entering the house. Wear practical foot wear on your hard wood floor, and avoid pointy heels. These can actually exert immense pressure on your floor, causing denting and scratching. Vacuum regularly, but use a brush attachment and not a beater.
